SecureWorks’ Director of Malware Research Joe Stewart presents Coreflood Research at ISOI in Estonia and will present at MAAWG and Digital Phishnet Conferences
Atlanta, September 18, 2008 - SecureWorks' Director of Malware Researcher Joe Stewart just returned from Estonia where he was invited to present his research on the Coreflood Trojan to members of the Internet Security Operations and Intelligence organization (ISOI), at its fifth internet security workshop held September 11 and 12th in Tallinn, Estonia. http://www.isotf.org/isoi5.html
Stewart recently discovered that the Coreflood Trojan has been infecting corporate employees in great numbers amassing thousands of infections. In the past 6 months, the hackers behind Coreflood have stolen 463,582 usernames and passwords for thousands of accounts associated with banks, stock trading, payroll processors, mortgage lenders, and online payment processors. Stewart presented his Coreflood report to the ISOI, a forum where cybercrime researchers can privately present on their projects and research. "I found this forum to be extremely valuable because you are privy to a lot of current research that otherwise you would never know was happening, it is information that the researchers don't tend to publicize," said Stewart. "The presentations are typically short so you get to hear about a lot of different projects and know who's working on what. It was a really good opportunity for SecureWorks to further expand its network of international research contacts."
Stewart to Speak at MAAWG and Digital PhishNet
Stewart has also been invited to present his research on the "top spam botnets "at the upcoming Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) conference in Ft. Lauderdale, September 22-24. MAAWG is a global organization focusing on preserving electronic messaging from online exploits and abuse with the goal of enhancing user trust and confidence, while ensuring the deliverability of legitimate messages. MAAWG works to address messaging abuse by focusing on technology, industry collaboration and public policy initiatives. http://www.maawg.org/.
Stewart will end September by giving a presentation at the Digital PhishNet (DPN) Conference where he will present profiles of the cyber criminals behind the leading malware. The Conference runs from September 29-October 1, in San Diego. Digital PhishNet (DPN) was established in 2004 as a collaborative enforcement operation to unite industry leaders in technology, banking, financial services and online retail services with law enforcement to combat "phishing." https://www.digitalphishnet.org/Default.aspx
